Thomas' research spans development studies, global and public health, political economy, economic and political sociology, urban sociology, quantitative methods and east Africa.
He is currently interested in the following topics: slum urbanism in the Global South; IMF lending in low-income countries and political settlements in east Africa.
Over the years, his research has been funded by Cambridge Political Economy Society Trust, Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, and Nga Pae o te Maramatanga.
His research has appeared in leading academic journals, including the Review of International Political Economy, Social Science & Medicine and World Development.
