Patrick McGrann: Lessons in Conflict: Learning the limits of soft and hard power from the (Gazan) students who live it

August 31, 2016

After a decade of field experience working with youth in conflicted societies throughout the Middle East and North Africa, Patrick is pursuing a multi-year research study exploring the efficacy of multilateral development programming in the Gaza Strip and its correlation to political violence.  In particular, Patrick is focused on investigating the relevance of one of the most expensive development initiatives in conflict settings, the Palestinian Authority’s largely peace-based school curriculum, and what insight its roll-out sheds on both soft power and how young people learn amidst conflict.  Building from two years of Gaza-based research working with students educated under the peace-based curriculum, Patrick’s research largely highlights the contemporary  impotence of top-down political narratives and stresses the importance of candor when guiding youth through their often violent realities.
